If anyone is in the same situation as my mother and uses The Recipe Manager on iOS and/or macOS, the app is end of life and is not supported by the recent update of iOS 11 / macOS High Sierra. Your options are to move your recipes to a different platform or keep running the now outdated iOS 10 / macOS Sierra. Running an outdated operating system is a non-option in my opinion so your recipes need to be moved elsewhere. I got wind of the fact that my mom had started manually copying / pasting her ~1,200 recipes in to Google Drive and I told her to stop and let me take a look at it.

The Recipe Manager offers an export feature (described on page 52 of their User Manual) which allows for the bulk exporting of all recipes to a single text file. With that file I was easily able to write a Laravel Command with the help of Spatie's string package to parse the exported text file and create one document for each recipe which could be uploaded in to Google Drive's native doc format. Have a look at an example below.

Two takeaways from this experience:

  1. If anyone else is in the same boat, please contact me and I will happily convert their recipes to a format that can be uploaded to Google Drive.
  2. If you ever find yourself contemplating a repetitive task on your computer, ask someone with technical knowledge and they can most likely help you get it done faster and more accurately.
